The community of Montaña De Fe has graduated

In 2023, the community transitioned from sponsorship to self-sufficiency. Because of the dedication and partnership of sponsors like you, local people and organizations have been equipped to continue leading the community’s development – and that is something to celebrate!

Program Details

The Montaña de Fe community is located in northwest El Salvador, in the municipality of Ciudad Barrios, one of the country's poorest and most remote areas. Homes here are usually made of sun-dried brick with thatched roofs, and access to basic services is limited. Residents practice subsistence farming on small plots of land, though the hilly and rocky terrain leaves them susceptible to landslides and soil erosion. Most households are headed by women, with many men having left in search of work.

Montaña de Fe’s path to graduation  

When our program in Montaña de Fe began, community members worked with us to identify their specific challenges. We found, for example:

  • School dropout rates were high, with students lacking motivation to learn.
  • Children weren’t consuming a healthy diet and families struggled to cover their medical expenses.
  • With people continually migrating away, in search of a better life, community trust and collaboration was low.

Over more than 15 years, the members of this community have worked to tackle their challenges and create an environment where their children can be healthy, cared for and equipped with skills to succeed.

Signs of sustainability 

Now, as the Montaña de Fe program prepares to graduate and World Vision concludes our time in this area, local leaders, organizations and institutions are continuing the progress that we started together.

  • Nearly 130 young people are working to improve their community as members of local organizations.
  • 1,111 people have joined water, sanitation or hygiene initiatives, and knowledge of preventive healthcare has improved.
  • 16 local partners and organizations have been engaged in our programs over the past seven years.
