The community of Enemay has graduated

In 2023, the community transitioned from sponsorship to self-sufficiency. Because of the dedication and partnership of sponsors like you, local people and organizations have been equipped to continue leading the community’s development – and that is something to celebrate!

Program Details

Enemay (pronounced En-eh-my) is a community with a population of about 250,000, located 265 kilometres northwest of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. Enemay's geography consists of plains, mountains and gorges. More than 70 per cent of the land is cultivated and the rest is pasture or bush land. Less than half of the community is accessible by road.

Enemay’s path to graduation

When our program in Enemay began, community members worked with us to identify their specific challenges. We found, for example:

  • A shortage of safe drinking water and poor community sanitation was making children sick.
  • There weren’t enough schools and buildings were in rough shape—children’s attendance and literacy rates suffered.
  • Girls and boys were vulnerable to early marriage, child labour and violent methods of discipline.

Over more than 15 years, the members of this community have worked to tackle their challenges and create an environment where their children can be healthy, cared for and equipped with skills to succeed.

Signs of sustainability

Now, as the Enemay program prepares to graduate and World Vision concludes our time in this area, local leaders, organizations and institutions are continuing the progress that we started together.

  • 35,958 people have learned healthy water, sanitation and hygiene habits through community initiatives.
  • Primary school coverage has grown from 60% to 98%, and all 38 district schools have active children's clubs.
  • 156 local organizations have been engaged in our programs, working for children’s well-being over the past seven years.
