Response Details

On February 6, 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake, followed by a magnitude 7.5 earthquake—believed to be the strongest in the region in over a century—struck southeastern Türkiye and northern Syria. According to Reuters, more than 47,000 people were killed, with millions left homeless and hundreds of thousands of buildings damaged and destroyed.

Well over 2 million children have been impacted, including many in northwest Syria who are now unaccompanied because they’ve lost one or both parents and have no identification documents. According to UNICEF, 1.4 million children in northwest Syria were already internally displaced before the earthquake. This disaster has exponentially increased pre-existing protection concerns, including the risk of sexual and gender-based violence for girls and women.

World Vision’s Syria Türkiye Earthquake Response

World Vision has mobilized protection teams in the area to ensure the safety of children who’ve been affected. We are using our child protection centres to provide mental health and psychosocial support.

Our response has also included:

  • Distributing fuel and heaters to collective shelters and emergency ambulances
  • Supporting primary healthcare
  • Providing shelter and winterization kits
  • Providing ready-to-eat meals

Our immediate response is taking place in Gaziantep and Sanliurfa in Türkiye; and Azaz, Afrin and Idlib in Syria.

What has World Vision been doing in the area prior to the earthquake?

World Vision’s Syria Response has been operating since 2011 inside Syria, Jordan and Türkiye. Our efforts have focused on providing various services to refugees and local communities impacted by the conflict in Syria.

World Vision Canada currently supports over 446,000 people in northwestern Syria with health, water and sanitation, child protection and nutrition programming, via Global Affairs Canada funding. In one of our project areas, access to health services increased from 14.5 per cent to 69.4 per cent, and 77.8 per cent of vulnerable girls and boys improved their well-being after accessing support services and counselling.
