The community of Rugarama has graduated

In 2024, the community transitioned from sponsorship to self-sufficiency. Because of the dedication and partnership of sponsors like you, local people and organizations have been equipped to continue leading the community’s development – and that is something to celebrate!

Program Details

The Rugarama (pronounced roo-gah-rah-mah) community is located in eastern Rwanda, about 100 kilometres from Kigali, the capital. The area is characterized by hills, flat plains, and a few marshy areas. While there are two rainy seasons, people here endure more periods of drought than elsewhere in Rwanda.

Rugarama’s path to graduation

When our program in Rugarama began, community members worked with us to identify their specific challenges. We found, for example:

  • Girls and boys needed more effective, child-friendly teaching methods to help them learn.
  • Children battled malnutrition—food production was low, affected by climate change and ineffective farming techniques.
  • Unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene practices were making families sick.

Over nearly 15 years, the members of this community have worked to tackle their challenges and create an environment where their children can be healthy, cared for and equipped with skills to succeed.

Signs of sustainability

Now, as the Rugarama program prepares to graduate and World Vision concludes our time in this area, local leaders, organizations and institutions are continuing the progress that we started together.

  • 38 school children's clubs, 7 youth clubs and 7 child protection committees are supporting young people’s protection and interests.
  • Strong partnerships with local government, organizations, health facilities and parents have improved families’ lives.
  • 70 water, sanitation and hygiene committees are monitoring the community’s facilities and water use.
