The community of Ketumbeine has graduated

In 2023, the community transitioned from sponsorship to self-sufficiency. Because of the dedication and partnership of sponsors like you, local people and organizations have been equipped to continue leading the community’s development – and that is something to celebrate!

Program Details

With the help of your generous and loving support, life in Ketumbeine has transformed. Children and families are much stronger now. The community has met its goals, they have graduated to self-sufficiency and World Vision is leaving the community to help another one. Your support will have a lasting impact for years to come.

Context

The Ketumbeine (pronounced kay-toom-bay-ee-nay) community is located in the north-eastern part of Tanzania. The land is dry and rainfall is unpredictable. Most precipitation comes in the early spring. As nearly all of the people here are Maasai, whose pastoral culture is based on herding livestock, the prolonged dry seasons and drought can be devastating.

When we partnered with this community, most of the families suffered from malnutrition, and 83 per cent of households survived on less than $1 a day. Dependency on livestock as the sole source of income was a root cause of poverty. In addition, the culture was largely patriarchal, and the rights of young girls and women were often not upheld.
